Academic Programs

Summer Seminar

The Institute’s Summer Seminars on Liberty, Economy and Society are weeklong seminars for high school and college students led by Brian Gothberg, Lecturer in the History of Western Civilization at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Each seminar is a major program in economics, history, law and philosophy for students on the ideas and ideals of liberty and freely competitive markets. Held at the Independent Institute’s conference center in Oakland, California.

Independent Scholarship Fund

The Independent Scholarship Fund (ISF) is a partnership made possible by funding from foundations, corporations, community organizations and individuals which offers up to $1,500 per year for K-12 private school tuiton assistance. These scholarships, available to children in Alameda and Contra Costa counties in California, allow parents to consider education alternatives for their children.
The May 2nd application deadline for the 2008-2009 school year has now passed.
Essay Contest

The annual Sir John Templeton Fellowships Essay Contest recognizes outstanding original student and faculty research into the meaning and significance of personal and economic liberty. The program awards college students and young professors with cash fellowships for the best essays on a given topic. All essays are read and judged by a panel of distinguished scholars.
The next essay contest has begun.  Submissions are due May 1, 2009.
Internships

Student Internships are available throughout the year at the Independent Institute’s Oakland, California headquarters. Interns assist Institute Fellows and staff in public policy research and support other programs.
